Apple Watch SE (Gen 2): Is it a wise investment for your wrist?

Apple series Se 2 Generation
Apple’s new affordable and budget smartwatch is a step up from the original with some great fitness and security features. And the best watch from Apple and Galaxy Watch is worth a look. Apple Watch SE 2nd generation came with a different mindset, which is probably why it didn’t need an overhaul. Instead, Apple has made it even lighter. New colour, new processor for the future and a slight reduction in price too.
If you want to know from this apple watch SE 2 gen review whether it is worth upgrading from the original apple watch SE, then the answer is no. You don’t get any major new features here – most notable is car accident detection, which is definitely desirable but I don’t think most people will pay approx $250 / £250 just for this.
If you are wondering which choice you want to make between Apple Watch Series 8 or Apple Watch SE 2 gen, then it depends on which important feature you want and how much you are willing to pay for them. The Series 8 has an always-on screen, along with a pulse oxygen sensor, an ECG, and a temperature sensor designed to help manage productive health—especially for females. If you don’t feel like you care about any of these health sensors, the Series 8 is worth spending a lot of money for a very different experience.
The Apple Watch is a relatively versatile and affordable smartwatch. But it lacks one feature that should have been an always-on display.

Apple Watch SE (2 generation): “Design”

Apple series Se 2 Generation design

To begin with, it will be easy to understand the Apple Watch SE 2020 model. Like its last model, the new SE gen is available in aluminium finish and comes in 40- and 44-millimetre options. However, the other changes are in the colour options of the SE. You will also get a chance to choose from colours such as midnight, starlight and silver, while the version available in silver, spacegrey and gold options is also available.
Apple has also designed the back side of the watch with new finishing that matches more with the casing of the Apple Watch. It’s a nice touch that makes the new SE 2 feel much more premium, but it’s only worth focusing on when the watch is on your wrist.
The Apple Watch SE doesn’t have the big screen found on the Series 8 and Series 7, so generally speaking, the case doesn’t matter. If you like using larger text on the Apple Watch, you could benefit from using one of the larger models. But other than that, the SE 2 gen’s display easily has plenty of space for reading notifications and new headlines.
I find that type of large display to be very lacking, as anytime I’m away from my phone I have the ability to use the on-screen QWERTY keyboard to instantly respond to text. Samsung’s approx $280 Galaxy Watch 5, which also comes in a 40mm option, is available for a similar price as the Apple Watch SE, and has a digital keyboard as well. I imagine Apple would also find a way to make it work like this, but you can still send messages by writing words via dictation.
Apple Watch SE (2 Gen): “Display”
First up, the screen looks the same: an OLED display that can deliver up to 1,000 nits of brightness. Yes, it looks the same as the Series 8’s screen. But yes, the display is excellent in most situations, including outdoors. There can be interference from reflections, but we haven’t found any real issues.

The Apple Watch Series 8, however, has an always-on screen, which is because when it goes black, the screen turns off, so that the time (or the statics of the current exercise) is still shown, but power consumption is minimal. Unlike most people, the Apple Watch SE 2’s technology is just fine. It responds to the kind of movement it’s designed for. When you move your wrist, it responds strongly and quickly.
What’s more, you don’t get the Series 8’s always-on display. With the Watch SE 2, it moves when you hold your wrist down. So if you don’t have to turn your watch head to the side, you get a completely black screen. It does go black after a while, even if it’s still on the side.
All of this ultimately means it’s harder to see the statics of your workout when doing certain exercise types – meaning, anything where you don’t want to move your hands. Weights, cycling, elliptical – with an always on screen, you can get the information without moving your wrist. But that’s not the case with the SE 2nd gen. So while the absence of an always on screen isn’t a major drawback, it’s definitely a potential drawback from the form, and it depends on how you want to use your watch.
Apple Watch SE (2 Gen): “Battery Life”
I have one big sore spot on the Apple Watch SE 2 – battery life is very different from Apple’s claims. Apple says the SE 2 has “about” 18 hours of battery life, which is basically in line with the company’s standard claim for its own watches. Apple’s statements about battery life are sometimes on the conservative side, but that’s a straight line about how poorly it sells things.

Apple series Se 2 Generation battery

During a full 24-hour period of wearing the SE 2, we only saw the battery go down by about 45% to 50%. Obviously this varies day to day, but to give you a typical day: we charged it to full and wore it for a full day, including outdoor walks, workouts as well as tracked pedal travel, so more active than the speed sensor and GPS, for 2 and 2.5 hours per day; and also we let it lie all night while sleeping; and then we also timed and tracked an outdoor cycling workout.
After 24 hours, we had 42% battery left the next morning. So, for real-world use, we’re best off with about 2 days, and that includes a full night of sleep tracking. And if you’re giving it a full night off, you’re best off with about 3 days of use. And so, clearly, this new low power mode is touch-free, which can be activated by swiping up or down from the bottom side of the watch’s display and tapping the battery symbol, and flicking a switch on the screen.

So, for battery saving, the SE 2 is deactivated to do certain things while in the background, like deactivating heart-rate readings, which simply means you won’t get irregular heart-rate reports when it’s active.
What we found in just a week of battery life is that it charges just as fast as the Series 8, which comes with a much more powerful charging option. Well, the long battery life means this isn’t such a big deal – and if we’re ready for work every morning, it’s getting close to 100% charge. Yes, it’s only slow when you feel like you need to charge for a while.
Apple Watch SE (2 Gen): “Health & Fitness”
There are fewer new health or fitness features in the Apple Watch SE Gen 2 than the original model, but that means it’s still a pretty decent package for all the ingredients – as long as you’re not planning on going really hardcore.

This includes a motion sensor that helps you focus on speed and audio to your personal panel, providing GPS location and speed data on all models, an improved pulse sensor that can track heart rate and warn you about hertz heart rhythms, a noise sensor that warns you about hearing damage, sleep monitoring, and plenty of the usual health options.
There’s no ECG, pulse oxygen sensor or resonance sensor – these are features you’ll find in the Apple Watch Series 8. Fitbit (mainly the Fitbit Rain and Sense ranges) supports some quality equivalent or standard smartwatches, so getting them for the price isn’t exactly impressive.
The real big difference in detail is the addition of a new, very accurate accelerometer (sensor that detects motion). This supports Apple’s new Car Accident Detection feature, so if you’re involved in any accident, your Apple Watch will know if you’re okay, and if you don’t answer, it will automatically call emergency services.

Apple series Se 2 Generation health & fitness

Apple has improved the Sleep Supplier in watchOS 9, including how deep you’re sleeping, and a lot of information about this is laid out in an easy-to-understand graph. A medication reminder label has also been added, which has two properties: 1) there’s a specific place for it, which is different from your normal reminder; and 2) if you forget to take your medication, this information is split into the Health app so you can see beautiful, albeit low-impact, changes like heart rate, poor sleep, and so on.
Apple Watch 2 also supports some passive fitness, which means it will still track your workouts until your document starts to show. If it looks like you’re doing something that matches a pixel, it’ll pop up and ask what you want it to record. Generally, this is all pretty reliable on Apple Watch, and that’s the case here.
When it comes to fitness, both Watch SE Gen 2 and Watch OS 9 still have a lot of restrictions on your stock routines to track, but you do have the option to use a dedicated app. If all of this sounds unfamiliar to you, that’s because it is. Very little has changed in terms of fitness – but it has improved over time and with suggestions.
