Our team was very excited about an update that Apple did last year, in which Apple added an action button, which changed the layout of hardware buttons for the first time in salons. When talking about the age of the camera, we still find the camera system to be the same as before. It has three rear lenses and a single front-facing selfie camera. The rear lens was introduced last year and is (mostly) optional: This is a 48mp wide lens with an ƒ/1.78 aperture which Apple for some reason now calls a “Fusion” lens instead of a main lens.The ultra wide is new – 48mp made 12 – but with a similar ƒ/2.2 aperture and similar 12mp output because Apple doesn’t let you configure it to shoot 24mp or 48mp shots like it does with the main lens, unless you go with the ProRAW format. The telephoto lens is unchanged, it is still stuck at 12MP. As mentioned, it has 5x optical zoom, and an ƒ/2.8 aperture.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has Spatial Audio recording for Vision Pro fans, a “studio quality” four-mic array, wind noise reduction capabilities, an audio mic feature for editing audio in videos, and some new video recording configs. Apart from these, there are two big changes, one in hardware and one in software. The changes in hardware are called camera control. It’s a button on the right side of the device, below the power button, and it’s located in the right place when the device is in landscape mode. And it offers several surprising features. Basically, it’s a button. When you press it, the camera will appear. Press it again and you’ll take a photo. Keep it pressed and you’ll start recording a video.
This is all very basic and it works pretty well, although Apple already provided several ways to get into the camera app, from the home screen, from the lock screen and via the action button. But the camera control is also capacitive. When you’re in the camera app, you can lightly double press it to see an on-screen menu of camera controls like exposure, zoom, depth camera (selfie, 1x, 2x and 5x lenses available), style and tone. The camera control is one such thing that seems useful at first glance. But it’s not difficult to control anything through it with the available on-screen controls. Also, if you’re taking photos in portrait mode, which is often seen in phones, its physical placement isn’t as appropriate.
Speaking of photography style, this wasn’t a filter that you “apply” to a photo. Rather, this feature changed the look of the result photo forever. You could edit them later, of course. But you couldn’t remove the style; it was inherent in the photo itself. So with this latest generation of photographic style, Apple has made some impressive internal changes: If you shoot photos in HEIC format instead of JPEG, you can remove or change the style later. This is, of course, good. And incredibly useful too.
To configure any of the styles, you have to go directly to the camera settings which are available in the Settings app, not the Camera app and then go through a simple wizard that first asks you to select four photos so you can see what effect applying any of the styles has on them so you can choose easily. It’s that simple. But you have to take at least four photos before you can configure or use this feature. The other camera features don’t hold any surprises, except that the ultra-wide shots aren’t much better or different than before. We think Apple will definitely upgrade its telephoto lens next year and it will do it sooner or later, similar to what Google did with the Pixel last year.

After doing some testing we found that iPhone 16 Pro Max easily gave more than 9 hours of active screen-on time and we got a maximum time of 9 hours 30 minutes with approx 11 percent battery left. Talking about battery performance, Apple has done a great job in this matter and this is one such thing which will be tough for the competition to face. Lastly, wired charging speed has become the weakness of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. And at such a time while the phone gets fully charged in almost 30 minutes, the iPhone 16 Pro Max got 50% charged in 32 minutes. It takes approximately 100 minutes for complete charging with 20w adopter and that too several times.
